Malta Citizenship by Investment Programme

In January 2014, The Republic of Malta introduced the Malta Individual Investor Programme (MIIP) which allows an applicant the opportunity to gain naturalisation through the Malta Citizenship by Investment Programme. Also known as the Malta Individual Investor Programme, the citizenship by investment programme offers an EU passport to high net worth individuals and their families, who in return make a significant investment in Malta.

The process would involve the applicant and his related dependants going through a naturalisation process with a certificate of naturalisation being issued after a twelve month process.

Who can apply for the Malta citizenship scheme?

Applications may be received by anyone from around the world except those countries where international sanctions apply. At present, individuals from the following countries cannot apply:

  • Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
  • Islamic Republic of Iran
  • Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)
  • Libya
  • Sudan
  • Yemen
  • Somalia
  • Syria
  • Iraq

Individual Investor Programme

The Malta IIP (Malta citizenship scheme) is aimed at ultra-high net worth individuals and families worldwide. It offers citizenship in a EU Member State that is politically stable with very low crime rate and highly respected. One of the world’s strictest due diligence standards and vetting of applicants ensures only highly respectable clients will be admitted.

Citizenship is granted to suitable individuals and families who hold residency status in Malta for a period of 12 months immediately after the day of issuing of the certificate of naturalization. All individuals and families applying for the Malta Individual Investor Programme must make a significant contribution to the National Development and Social Fund established by the Government. The following criteria must be met in the initial phase of the Malta citizenship application:

  • Contribution to National Development and Social Fund of EUR 650,000 for the main applicant;
  • Purchase a real estate property at a minimum value is EUR 350,000, or through leasing of a property, for which the minimum annual rent is EUR 16,000;
  • An investment of EUR 150,000 in government bonds, which must be maintained for a minimum period of 5 years is required.

Once granted with citizenship under the Malta Individual Investor Programme, you and your family enjoy full citizenship for life, which can be passed onto future generations by descent.
